International Relations Commissioner of Fatah Dr. Nabeel Shaath received on March 8, 2010 a large Italian delegation from the district of Alexandria. Dr. Shaath who cordially welcomed the delegation discussed with his Italian guests the latest political developments in the area. He said that “we will carry on the peaceful popular struggle to face Israeli schemes”, and called for increased international solidarity and support by the International Solidarity Movement.
Dr. Shaath discussed the latest political developments by emphasizing that the Palestinian territories are still suffering under full Israeli occupation despite the signed agreements with the Israeli side. He exposed the illegal Israeli practices such as house demolitions, the confiscation of land properties for the erection of more and more Israeli settlements and the expansionist Apartheid Wall. He emphasized that such practices aim at deepening the occupation and undermining the foundation for the creation of a Palestinian state within the 1967 boundaries.
Dr. Shaath talked about the expected meeting between the US Envoy George Mitchell and President Mahmoud Abbas in the framework of the proximity talks along a period of four months in order to give a chance to the international efforts to be deployed by the International Community.
The Italian delegation which was received at the International Relations Commission in Ramallah included Italian politicians, religious personalities, parliamentarians, Workers trade unionists and local government figures. The Italian delegation expressed their full support to the Palestinian people on all levels by saying that they will relay all what they have seen on the ground to the Italian people and explain Palestinian sufferings in public.
It is worth mentioning that the district of Alexandria maintains twinning relations with Ramallah and the city of Alexandria is holding a twinning relationship with Jericho. Last year the district of Alexandria donated an amount of 40.000 Euros for the construction of a kinder garden in Ain Sinia village near Ramallah.
The delegation of thirty people was headed by Ms. Mara SCAGNI Vice President of the National Association of Italian Communities of Alexandria.
